The Most Understaffed Nursing Homes in Ohio

In statewide nursing home performance rankings, Ohio does not fare well. On their Nursing Home Report Card, Families for Better Care give Ohio a “D.” Clearly, there is room for improvement. So where are Ohio nursing homes lacking? One of the biggest weak spots is staffing. Facilities are not keeping enough nurses and support staff employed. This leads to a massive shortcoming in care.

The team at Tittle & Perlmuter wanted an easy way for people to review Ohio nursing homes and compare their quality of staffing. So we set out on a research project to compile data and produce an easily readable map.

The Research

The first step in this process was gathering the data. Fortunately, www.medicare.gov has a fantastic tool for comparing nursing home facilities in all 50 states. One of the ranking factors happens to be “Staffing.” We set to work compiling these rankings into a sortable list. From there, we created an interactive map to show which Ohio nursing homes perform the best, and which are the worst.

Map of Ohio Nursing Home Staffing Ratings

The idea of gathering this data and putting it in one place was to make it easy for people considering Ohio nursing homes to check the quality of staffing. We decided the best way to present this information was on an interactive map. Our map has the staffing quality information for over 900 nursing homes in the state of Ohio.

To use the map, zoom in on the area of interest and click on any of the nursing home pins. You’ll get an info box that tells you the name of the facility, the location, and a staffing rating on a scale from 1 to 5. 1 being the worst staffed, and 5 being the best staffed

Below is a table listing all of the nursing homes on the map. You can search for a specific nursing home by name or location, or you can simply scroll through the list.

What Is Used to Rank the Nursing Homes?

Our data was collected from Medicare.gov. To assign each nursing home its staffing rating, Medicare reviewed staffing hours for nurses at each location. They reviewed hours for the following nursing home positions:

  • Registered Nurses (RNs)
  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
  • Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs)
  • Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs)

Inside the Numbers

Looking at the map, it may be difficult to see just how many Ohio nursing homes are understaffed and underperforming. Here’s a highlight of some of the numbers:
30% of nursing homes in Ohio earned 2 stars or less for staffing.
31% received either 4 or 5-star ratings.
There were 364 (38% of the total) nursing homes that received an average, 3-star, rating.
In Cleveland, 4 nursing homes earned only a 1-star rating, while 3 facilities earned 5-stars.
The average staffing rating for Ohio nursing homes is 2.9.

Wrapping Up

In the United States, elder care and elder abuse is a troubling issue. Too often, we view abuse as active and malicious. But nursing home negligence can manifest in a variety of ways, including not providing enough staff to provide reasonable care for patients in the facility. In fact, a recent study of 2,000 US facilities showed a neglect rate of 95%. This is unacceptable.

Staffing numbers can be indicative of how nursing homes perform as a whole. Being understaffed leads to a slew of problems. Moving your loved one to an assisted living facility is already a difficult decision. You certainly don’t want to leave them in a facility where the level of care is inadequate.

We have designed and created this map to help in your search for the best nursing home to move your loved one to. Whether you’re already considering a specific facility or you want to check on a few in your area, we’ve got you covered.
