The Goal of a Rehab Hospital
This rehabilitation hospital can accommodate 60 beds for patients to stay in while they re-
adjust to daily life after their injury. The goal of this facility is one thing – transition the patient
from the hospital to home. In order to do this, patients may learn how to navigate with a
wheelchair or any other skill that would allow he or she to regain their independence. With that
in mind, the anticipated average stay of the facility will be 14 to 18 days. During this
time, the patients will have access to physical, occupational and speech therapy – whatever is
needed to get the patient home!
In fact, at Edwin Shaw’s other facilities, 76 percent of patients can go home immediately after
their stay at a facility like this because of the intensive, focused care he or she is able to receive
during their stay.
The Edwin Shaw Rehab Hospital, Bath Township Branch, is a joint project of the Cleveland Clinic
and Select Medical. Select Medical is a company that focuses on outpatient care in the form of
rehab hospitals, physical therapy and long-term acute care. This is the third joint rehab hospital
in Northeast Ohio, with the other facilities located in Avon Lake and Beachwood.
The Bath Township rehab hospital is located on State Route 18, near Akron General’s Health &
Wellness Center. The facility comes equipped with handicap accessible features, two gyms for
physical therapy, and apartment style rooms that include:
- Laundry
- Bathtubs
- Beds
- Stoves
Currently, 80 percent of Edwin Shaw Rehab Hospital comes from Akron General, but patients
from other areas are welcome to come to the facility.
