Treating a Brain Injury After a Car Accident

Brain Injury Treatment

Car accidents are the primary cause of brain injuries. The brain can become injured when the impact of an accident causes the skull to hit a hard surface, such as the windshield. Inside, the brain may keep on moving, causing bruising and other internal injuries.

Depending on the severity of the accident, a brain injury can cause lifelong injuries or even death. Treating a brain injury could last many months or years, or even the rest of your life. The level of care you will need will depend on the severity of the injuries.

Initial Treatment for Brain Injuries

After a brain injury, the first step is to obtain emergency medical care. If the victim is conscious, doctors will take X-rays and scans (such as an CT scan) to determine the severity of the injuries and treat them.

If the brain injury is severe, the patient will be admitted to the intensive care unit. There, staff will work on stabilizing the victim’s condition so that he or she can regain consciousness. The goal will be to monitor the victim’s health and prevent further injuries from occurring.

Rehabilitation

In order to allow for optimal recovery, it’s important to begin rehabilitation as soon as possible. Acute rehabilitation is the first step. This takes place in an inpatient setting and is led by a team of medical professionals. The patient relearns daily tasks such as walking, talking, toileting, bathing and dressing.

Depending on your progress, you may be transferred to subacute or postacute care. Subacute care is designed for those who need rehabilitation at a less intensive level. Postacute rehabilitation is recommended for those are improving greatly and ready to learn more independent skills.

If you are recovering at a quick pace but do not feel comfortable living on your own just yet, you may be transferred to an independent living program. This type of program focuses on helping you gain more skills so you can live without assistance. Under this program, you may live in a facility or live on your own with regular monitoring by an aide.

Even after you have recovered a great deal from your brain injury, you may receive outpatient therapy. This type of therapy is helpful for those looking to enhance their recovery or manage impairments caused by minor head trauma.

Medications

A doctor may prescribe a brain injury victim various medications to deal with various symptoms. Medications may be given to deal with pain, seizures, blood clots, muscle spasms, anxiety, hallucinations, sleep disorders and depression. Sedatives and stimulants are often prescribed as well.
