Zubizarreta House Provides Accessible Housing for Spinal Cord Patients

Zubizarreta House

Our Cleveland spinal cord injury attorneys do more than just handle your case – we make sure you have the resources you need to resume your life. Because of that, we at Tittle & Perlmuter were excited to learn that MetroHealth Hospital in Cleveland has opened a new treatment center for patients with spinal cord injuries called the Zubizarreta House – a one of the kind facility that allows for out of town spinal cord patients to rehab without staying in a hotel. Instead, the goal is to make you feel at home!

Zubizarreta House

This bed-and-breakfast style home for spinal cord injury patients recovering from treatments and rehab at MetroHealth opened back in May. The house with five suites and two innkeeper apartments is fully wheelchair accessible, has bathrooms with roll-in showers and motorized lifts for transfers between wheelchairs and beds. The combined living room and kitchen area promotes socializing with other guests. Cooking stations in the kitchen are also at an accessible height. The residence has a homey feel, instead of an institutional/hospital flavor.
The location of the Zubizarreta House is at Broadview and W. 33rd streets. Guests from out of town can stay for up to two months at no cost to them. That’s right – no cost! The home is also located only three minutes down the road from MetroHealth’s Old Brooklyn Health Center.

The Zubizarreta House became a real structure thanks to two individuals. The idea behind the accessible home came from Kevin Kilgore, a biomedical engineer and researcher at MetroHealth. Meanwhile, Miquel Zubizarreta, retired Hyland Software chief technology officer, helped fund the majority of the project.

Spinal Cord Research

The research related treatments that guests at the Zubizarreta House are participating in is for Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). The treatment works by implanting the device in a person’s chest or abdomen, which then stimulates paralyzed muscles. This is done in hopes to increase mobility for spinal cord patients.
