According to Cleveland.com, the number of traffic deaths in Ohio increased for the second year in a row. In 2015, Ohio had a least 1,057 confirmed traffic fatalities, which is up from 1,008 for 2014 and 990 for 2013. It is important to note that the 2015 numbers do not account for 42 deaths that are under review, but not yet confirmed as traffic fatalities.

Of the traffic fatalities for 2015, 60 percent of fatal crashes involved individuals not wearing a seat belt, while about one-third involved a driver impaired by alcohol or drugs. Further, the number of fatal crashes involving motorcycles, commercial vehicles like semi-trucks, and pedestrians increased as well. These statistics point to one thing – sadly, many of these traffic fatalities could have been prevented.

According to Lt. Craig Cvetan, an Ohio State Highway Patrol spokesman, the state of Ohio has taken steps to curb traffic fatalities. Specifically, Lt. Cvetan pointed to the digital message boards along the highways in Ohio detailing the number of crash deaths and the “Drive sober or get pulled over” campaign.
