In honor of Brain Injury Awareness Month during the month of March, our Cleveland Brain Injury lawyer, Allen Tittle, collaborated with staff and members at HansonHouse TBI Clubhouse to raise awareness of these injuries.
Living with a Traumatic Brain Injury – TBI Awareness Month
Causes of TBIs
The two main causes of traumatic brain injuries that our Cleveland personal injury firm deals with come from blunt force trauma and lack of oxygen. Blunt force trauma could result from a car crash, a fall, or any kind of impact to the head. Symptoms are similar to those of a concussion including headaches, vomiting, and dizziness. Lack of oxygen can occur during surgeries and strokes. The symptoms can include paralysis, weakness of limbs, dizziness, and short or long-term memory loss.
What makes brain injuries unique is that they can differ in levels of severity. However, it is important to seek medical attention immediately because brain bleeds cause swelling that can be deadly. It can be difficult because someone could have a severe brain injury yet look perfectly normal. One of the hardest aspects of recovery is moving on after the injury and getting reacclimated to your life. There is a significant need for care and support after being discharged from the hospital.
Resources and Support for TBI Victims
We collaborated with HansonHouse for Brain Injury Awareness Month because they provide resources, services, and support for people with traumatic brain injuries right in our own community. Their mission statement is to “empower people with traumatic brain injuries to enhance: self-determination, personal growth, community involvement and service, independence and productivity”. Some of the services they provide include:
- Recovery/relearning routines and habits of effective living
- Assistance by peers and community volunteers that foster independent living
- Matching marketable skills to employment and volunteer opportunities that benefit the community
